Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church - Sound System

The old system was 300 lbs of huge horns and speaker cabinets hanging in front of the organ pipes. The new speakers were a great change to the sight lines!

The sound system installation includes twenty Panaray® MA12EX Modular Line Array Loudspeakers. There are two triple stacks in the front and four triple stacks in the balconies. Single MA12EXs are used to smooth out the coverage for the side areas.

Put mouse over image to see (most of the) speaker locations.

The Bose arrays are located in the front on either side and on either side of all three balconies (triple stacks). A single Panaray was used for under the balcony coverage on both sides.

A Bose ControlSpace ESP 88 does all of the processing functions. All of the Eqs, limiters, delays, mic pre amps, and signal routing was done in this single digital processor.

It also provides the matrix and mixing needed for the Mid Side Mic system used for making stereo recordings.

An Allen & Heath iLive Digital Console features a T80 Surface – (Controller, 20 faders, 4 layers, Fixed format, 8 line in, 8 out) and an iDR-32 Mix Engine – (64x32 DSP, Fixed format, 32 mic/line in, 16 out) iLive can store channel settings on the console into Scene memories. These memories can then be seamlessly recalled for the next performance.

A Listen Technologies hearing assistance system was installed and provides individual recievers for 12 users.

A custom recording microphone array was also designed and installed. (Mid Side Mic technique using three DPA 4021 mics.) Click here for more details.

The new system can get very loud without a hint of feedback. The stability of the sound system is very impressive. The following story illustrates the anti-feedback qualities and how the Bose MA-12 speakers with that custom paint job go unnoticed by most people.

The piano is located in front of one of the arrays. Before a recent piano concert the pianist asked for a monitor. He was asked to try a rehearsal without a monitor to see if there was enough sound coming from the main system.

He quickly determined that a monitor was not needed. He asked where the speakers were located. He couldn’t find then even though they were only about ten feet away.

We often hear stories like this and we never tire of them!
