St Genevieve

This space was new construction. Before it was built, using Bose Modeler 6 (pdf link) software, we made a computer model of the room. Virtually every sound system we install has been designed with the aid of Bose Modeler software. This allows us to see what the system will sound like. With the recent advent of Bose Auditioner (see Modeler link above) we are now able to let the customer actually hear the system before we install it.

We warned the customer that acoustic treatment was needed. They went ahead with the sound system and decided to add the treatment later, as their budget allowed.

This is actually a multi-purpose room. The sound system was designed with that fact in mind.

This is a multi-purpose room .

Our solution in this reverberant room was to use a decentralized design that uses multiple speakers mounted close to the audience. Sound travels directly to the listener’s ears instead of bouncing off the walls and ceiling. This arrangement is commonly called a "distributed system". This also allowed us to turn off certain areas depending on how the room was being used. Bose ControlSpace was used to control the speakers and their output in the room.

Bose 402 speakers* were positioned down the center of the room. Bose Model 32s* were used for areas out of the main coverage pattern.

The heart of the new system was the new BOSE ControlSpace.

BOSE says,"The ControlSpaceTM ESP-88 ... has ... Parameter sets. These potentially complex scenarios can then be named and (stored). The end user then needs only to select the event type on the ... control center. All source selection and system control functions happen automatically".
What does that mean?
In our own words it means that ControlSpace is a digital processor with PRESETS. It can be configured to provide single button solutions for almost all of your needs.
Presets can be made for:
• Summer services with no choir and pre-recorded music
• Weddings
• Choir practice
• Services where attendance is low (some speakers turned off)
• Services where overflow areas are used (speakers turned on)
• Controlling recordings
• Turning on your 32 channel mixer for the service with the full band!
ControlSpace runs the system. A 12 channel mixer can be used manually.

Bose Panaray® 402® loudspeakers (pdf) were the main speakers used in this distributed system. Weighing only 15 lbs each, they were aimed straight down to take advantage of their wide 120 x 60 degree coverage pattern.

Bose FreeSpace® 32SE loudspeaker (pdf) were used to provide coverage to smaller areas. They use a single 11.34 cm driver (the 402 uses four) so the sound between the two areas is similar and seamless.
