The home for the women's hockey program at the University
of Minnesota is Ridder Arena.
EMI Audio had the job of designing and installing the sound
system. We used the building plans and the Bose Modeler computer
program to design the sound system before the building existed.
We presented our design to the U of M using the Bose Auditioner®
demonstrator.
This advanced Bose technology uses the information from the
architectural plans and the sound system design to let you |

hear how the building will actually sound before any decisions
have been made. You can listen as though you were in the building
-- from any seat, any section.
Although the sound coverage was excellent, the demonstartion
showed how reverberant |

the room would be. It was decided that acoustical panels would
be hung in the ceiling to reduce the reverb time of the
arena. We calculated the number of panels needed, devised the
mounting method and pattern. We worked nights to allow clear
ice for practices. |

After several weeks the acoustical panels and speakers for
the sound system were
all installed. The system was turned on.
The results were just as The Auditioner demonstrator had predicted.
The room was still very “alive” but the sound was
clear and intelligible. Everyone involved in the project was
very pleased
with the outcome.
The Gophers Hockey team went on to win the WCHA Championship
later in the year. |
