There are 3 TYPES of microphones:

Dynamic microphones are the most common and are very rugged. A Shure SM58 is a Dynamic mic.

Condenser microphones require a power source. A Shure PG81 is a Recording Condenser mic.

Ribbon microphones are delicate and expensive. Mostly used in recording studios

Omni directional microphones pick up sound from all directions. Recording mics are oftenOmni directional

Uni directional microphones pick up only from the front. A Shure SM58 is a Uni directional Dynamic mic.

Professional mics are low impedance (balanced) and use an
XLR cable. High impedance mics (unbalanced) use 1/4” cables.
